Specifying an Ark solution for a site

How is all of the necessary information gathered?

The information required to engineer an Ark solution and provide you with an accurate ROI is gathered during a comprehensive three-step process;
  1. a free site assessment of your premises.
  2. obtaining billing and other pertinent information from you.
  3. performing a Power Quality Analysis test of your electricity loads at 3-minute intervals over 7-days.

Is there a cost to the Power Quality Analysis?

Yes. The Power Quality Analysis of your electrical system is outsourced to our highly experienced Electrical Contracting partner companies and precision testing equipment is required for this process.

Energywise subsidises the cost to ensure that the Power Quality Analysis is offered well below the market rate for a comparable service.

Does the Power Quality Analysis need to be performed?

The Power Quality Analysis test is required for the following key reasons;
  • To analyse your incoming voltage supply to determine the level of voltage optimisation possible at your site.  It is important to conduct this over a 7-day period to enable us to view the voltage patterns at your site during the course of an entire week.
  • To provide information necessary to size The Ark unit required.
  • To engineer the most cost effective Ark solution for your premises, in order to maximise your ROI.
  • To identify any other electricity supply issues that may effect the installation of The Ark.
Within our Energy Savings Proposal, we provide the results of the power quality analysis and detailed information about your electricity supply quality. Sometimes during this process, we discover and are able to report to the client issues that may be detrimental to their operations.

Why can’t an Ark unit be sized from the Maximum Demand from our electricity bill?

For quality control, we believe it is imperative to size an Ark unit based upon a comprehensive understanding of the energy usage at a site.

The maximum demand figure on an electricity bill provides us with an early estimate of the size Ark unit that may be required.  However, this figure is derived from data collected by the electricity retailer every 30 minutes. By obtaining data collected every 3-minutes during our power quality analysis, we obtain far more precise information to enable us to size the correct capacity unit.

The small up-front cost of performing the power quality analysis frequently enables us to provide an Ark solution with a better financial ROI and a lower capital cost. It enables us to identify the optimum loads within a premise and to place smaller Ark units on select loads, rather than a larger front-end solution that may encompass loads that offer reduced savings.

Is there a minimum electricity spend required for The Ark to be viable?

At present electricity prices, an electricity spend of approximately $25,000 p.a. is required in order to achieve viable financial paybacks from the savings generated by The Ark.

What size premise can The Ark be installed in?

The Ark is designed for commercial and industrial 3-phase sites. There are 22 standard size units available, ranging from 22.5KVA to 2000KVA.  Units as large as 6000KVA can be custom supplied upon request.

The large range of unit sizes enables us to cater for an enormous variety in the size of premises and to engineer the most cost effective solutions for each site.

Is it best to do a ‘front-end’ solution or place multiple Ark units throughout our site?

Depending upon the specifics of the site, we can offer our clients either option.

A ‘front-end solution’ involves placing one Ark unit that encompasses the entire electricity load of a site.  This generates the greatest electricity and carbon emissions savings for the business.  Sometimes due to the size of the incoming load and the design of the main switchboard, this option is not practical, as there may be physical restrictions within the switch-room and hence modifications required that make this an unviable option.

For many sites, and particularly the larger ones, we can often obtain a better financial ROI by targeting specific loads that provide the best energy savings (i.e. constant loads with long operating hours). This means that multiple Ark units with a smaller total capital cost than a larger ‘front-end’ solution may provide a more attractive financial proposition for your business.

With an understanding of your energy saving objectives and the information we collect on-site, we can recommend the most suitable approach.
